It is easy to get carried away when you have a blog that attracts 8000 people a day. You have written a book that has sold upwards of 170,000 copies. You have 13000 Twitter connects and 5000 FB connects, and 4000 LInked In connects.

No. I am not trying to boast – these are facts that is for everyone to see, so it does not help enumerating.

What I am trying to say is that you think it must be easy to fill up a classroom anywhere in India with 100 people willing to pay Rs. 3000 to attend a workshop on “Goal Based Investing” or “Retire Rich-Invest Rs. 40 a day”, right? No. Wrong. When I announce in Hyderabad there will be people asking when will you hold in Delhi, Gurugram, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai……but the Hyd class will have 20 people. And I do choose small rooms -and be willing to shift to a bigger room – just in case!!

Do I have a solution? of course yes. Any mutual fund that I know will be more than happy to pick up the bill and people can get it free. It will be sponsored by a MF, and believe me they will not want anything from me. Just no obligation for me. Just relationship. Ditto for Pattu’s workshops.

Principally, I feel people should pay. It has to cover the cost of travel, the hall, equipment hire, food, etc. – maybe leave a small surplus – just for some emergencies. Of course if there are 100 people attending, the costs can fall dramatically – to say Rs. 1500 – because the costs are spread over a bigger number.

If I were a doctor, I could understand that there could be some patients who cannot afford say Rs. 500 for a visit. However if you want to manage your ‘wealth’ why should you want it free? Beats me.

Here is a link to the Hyderabad workshop…in case you wish to attend

  1. Correctly noted this, Subra sir.
A person who knows nothing or who has no wealth that needs to be managed, does not know the value of takeaway from this workshop.
A person who thinks he is expert, wants nothing from this workshop. paying 150 for a book or something..
A person who middles the above two, is looking for a ‘secret’ takeaway he expects from this workshop by paying 3000 Rs, that will earn him ‘at least’ Rs 3000 by attending the workshop and unleashing this secret takeaway.

You can never make this free one sir, even if you wanted to. Otherwise people will never recognize value in it. You ‘have to’ charge.
(google “Joshua Bell subway experiment”, when people did not stop to listen when it was free, but pay $100 for tickets <- real one)

  2. Rajnikant V Gajjar

    Definitely what you say,hurts
    But, yes,that is fact
Even though everyone knows there is no free lunch, everyone expects same.
Right , everyone knows, nobody wants to follow.
    What to do?
Continue to do whatever that is Right
    Accept the treatment
    Expect
    Better days

  3. Why not make the sessions online…Then the cost will also come down drastically and more people can join in..Since most of Subramoney followers are online..Why do sessions offline.
