this is NOT A PAID POST. People keep asking me which is a good international degree to get in accounting. I don’t have any knowledge of this subject, but I do know that CPA is a good degree (aka membership) to get. I had somebody working in one of the agencies which help you in getting that degree and they have sent me a write up. As a courtesy to them I have given a link. I am not a CPA, nor an aspirant, nor do I have any financial or other linkage to the company whose name is mentioned at the bottom…

Certified Public Accountant, USA (CPA) is a designation given by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), world’s largest accounting body, to those who meet education and experience requirements and pass an exam. The areas covered in CPA Exams are Auditing & Attestation,
Business Environment & Concepts, Financial Accounting & Reporting, and Regulation.

Who should take CPA:
Anyone who wants to build a career in the INTERNATIONAL accounting field, CPA is an excellent international
certification opportunity for them. CPAs are globally recognized as premier accountants and are hired
across industries throughout the world.

Why CPA:

CPA is one of the world’s most recognized accounting designations. A wide range of career options in
public accounting or corporate accounting are available for CPAs. They can move into executive
positions such as controllers or chief financial officers (CFOs).
Other benefits of CPA designation include:
– Academic Excellence: A CPA qualification is similar to the Indian CA qualification. In addition to
the CA qualification, a CPA will have knowledge of US GAAP, GAAS and US federal taxation and
business laws. This gives a great advantage to a CPA when working with US Based Financial firms
or Indian firms working for US clients.
– International Recognition: Excellent opportunity for CA, ICWA, CS, LLB, MBA (Finance), M.com
and Commerce Graduates who aspire for an International Certification. The exam is
administered by the AICPA, which is the world’s largest accounting body.
– Flexibility & Ease: It’s a single level online exam with just 4 Papers; one can easily clear the
exams in less than a year
Eligibility:
To appear for the CPA Examination, the candidate must be at least a Post Graduate, preferably from
Commerce stream i.e M.COM, MBA Finance etc. There are states who accept B. Com with CA from ICAI
as well.

  1. You have mentioned “To appear for the CPA Examination, the candidate must be at least a Post Graduate, preferably from Commerce stream”… does that mean that people from other stream (Can a doctor become CPA?) can also become CPA??

  2. @Raj Nair : The minimum eligibility criteria for US CPA is 120 college credits as accounting subjects are in the academics. Hence preferably a BCom with Post Graduation in Accounts (MCom, MBA Finance, CA) are eligible for the US CPA course.

@Shivv : It would be difficult, though not impossible, for an engineer to be eligible, as there are no accounting subjects in the academics. Minimum requirement is 120 college credits which is equal to a Bachelors in Commerce stream with a Post Graduate in Accounts or Finance.
