If you are more than 10 years old somebody has told you that “Saving is the key to your future prosperity” or “a Rupee saved is a Rupee earned” – we love the savers. In fact that is what makes ALL our terribly managed banks also profitable. Very profitable despite the NPA that they create!

Lets look at it this way. If you save money, that much money is spent less – which means somebody else did not ‘earn’ that money. So the government did not earn more taxes, more service tax, …and the money was sleeping in your account. This actually is making the bank more profitable – and technically the bank can ‘lend’ more. Our banks (psu especially) have no great talent for lending, so they invest in Government securities – almost all our banks have more investments than what is statutorily needed to be invested.

So saving does not help much. The interest that you earn is taxed and thus you get a very poor post tax return – always negative Real rate, almost guaranteed to be that way.

You can allocate that savings to Investment – i.e. buy shares. This too does nothing for creating wealth for you. It creates wealth for the person who has already ‘invested’ in plant machinery, labor, rent to create profits. The person who had invested in those ‘REAL ASSETS’ was the original investor. You are making him rich, and hopefully yourself too.

The Real Investments – of buying land, machinery, people – and creating new products is the INVESTMENT which creates jobs. This creates real wealth. However the ‘passive’ investing we do makes investing and capital allocation MORE efficient. So the importance of this type of investing cannot be scoffed at.

So everything is important – savings, investing – as in capital allocation and Investing in Real assets. However a REAL return will happen ONLY in smart Investing, not in Savings.

  1. this is called “smalsqurrelsuccess of a success story” called “UDATHA BHAKTHI”
the small squireel helps “LORD RAMA” in construction of a bridge across india to lanka”
so it is part of a success of huge success story called “RAMAYANA”
unknowingly we all help some one else success even though we may be “failures” in our own life!
so we all are a part of a success of a “successful life!” of someone we don’t even know!
    so we all are successful!

  2. Thanks for the awesome explanation. There are also one of the best investment mantras to get higher returns with tax benefit from SIP.
Systematic Investment Plans, are commonly known as SIPs. SIP is just a modest way to start mutual fund portfolio and it can prove most powerful
tool for wealth building along with the tax benefit. SIPs are a good option to start investing with, if you are a beginner. You can start with an amount as low as Rs. 500/-. SIPs reduce the burden of having to collect a lump sum first and then invest it. With SIPs, you can invest small amounts every month. You have the flexibility of even increasing your SIP amount. You just need to let your SIPs grow and let the magic of compounding work for you. There’s no right time to invest through SIPs. Now is always the right time.

  3. This also explains why real estate in a residential flat is considered as an investment where only person making real money is the Land Owner and the Builder and bank’s if property is funded via a loan. The gullible investors think they will earn more than bank deposit through increase in valuation of the flat.
Moreover this is the reason why there is a situation where real estate prices are not reducing in-spite of there being no actual end-user led demand and the builder’s are happy perpetuating the myth of real estate being an excellent “investment”.

  4. Once we understand the difference between the two, it is easier than we think to follow through. We need to save and invest more and do so for longer than just a few years.

  5. Subra,
Why don’t you start a youtube channel? I am sure it will be super hit. You have a good fan following and this way you can extend your reach.
Some ppl learn by reading. others by watching and listning. Also its a well established fact that audio visual medium is always a better choice for educational purposes.
You can also earn a decent amount of money (not that i think you need it ☺ ).
