  1. The thinking prowess of some of these graduates from b-schools also are without compare.

Once in a marketing competition in one of Ahmedabad’s premier B-schools, the case study challenge was to increase SBI MF’s marketing reach and consequently, their retail customer base.

The host school’s team had an innovative marketing idea that went like this. SBI’s marketing team would run a campaign where they would ask random (middle-class) people on the streets, to take a challenge. They would have to close their eyes, take a sniff of whatever was thrust in their face and if they guessed correctly, they would be rewarded. The object to be guessed was a ‘500 Rs’ note and the reward was a 500 Rs installment in an SBI MF in the winner’s name.

The winning team, from a tier-2 Mumbai B-school, curiously had a powerpoint with a slide that had a heart, brain and something else (don’t remember exactly). They wanted to emphasize that SBI MF should change their positioning such that they could make their presence felt in the hearts and minds of the retail customer base.

  2. There are always exceptions..MBA degree from a good b-school does help a person to be Jack of all (if not master of atleast one). I am sure a ‘local’ [if you know what I mean by this word :-)] B-school won’t help any student much but I am sure a student learns loads of new things in a MBA program from a good B-school. (atleast I have learnt many better things and I am now a better person compared to what I was after graduation.)
