One question that I have never been able to answer clearly is “How much money do I need to really retire?”. There are some advisers who say the following:

  • you will get about 18% return on your equities, so you do not need much to retire
  • you will need about 2 crs. to retire and please do not get scared by Subra and his calculator friend Pattu
  • Subra’s figure of US $ 1 Million is OBVIOUSLY wrong so ignore
  • See Pattu’s calculator – it is applicable only for US I think

So since I do not know how much YOU require for retirement..i thought i will just tell you that I know the following:

  • I do not know you
  • I do not know how much are your monthly expenses, but have assumed Rs. 50k a month as of today
  • I do not know what returns you will get on your investments but some IFAs do know. Guilty as charged.
  • I do not know how long you will live. Stupid me.
  • I do not know how your expenses will span out, and do not know what rate of inflation to apply.
  • I do not know how long you or your spouse will be in Long Term Care – institutionalised or otherwise and what rate of inflation will be applicable for this

However I can do something else – give you a smart link…go have fun..fund..oops fun…

  1. i’m going with an expectation of being able to generate 1% more than personal inflation – which gives some assurance of inflation-indexed assets & income. based on that 100x factor seem ok. does that seem reasonable?
